Privacy policy

What Tasmania Biz Directory collects, why, and what you can do about it. Last updated 9 October 2026.

The short version

This site collects almost nothing about you. It has no user accounts, no advertising, and no third-party cookies of its own. The only personal information it receives is what you deliberately type into a form.

We also count how many times each listing page is opened. It is a number, not a person: no cookie, no IP address, no session and nothing that can be linked back to you. It tells us which trades people actually look for, which is the only basis on which we would ever price anything on this site.

We do use Google Analytics to see which pages are read and which trades people search for. It sets cookies and records your approximate location and how you reached the site. It does not tell us who you are.

There are two kinds of form, and they do different things. If you ask for a buying guide, all we get is an email address and all we do is send you the guide. If you ask for quotes, we pass your name, phone number and job details to local trades so they can contact you — that is what you are asking us to do when you tick that box, and it is how this site is funded.

Analytics, and what it records

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which parts of this directory are useful. It records the pages you view, roughly how long you spend, an approximate location derived from your IP address, what device and browser you used, and how you arrived — a search, a link, or a direct visit.

We use this to decide which trades to write guides for, which regions are underserved, and whether the site is working on a phone. It is not used to build a profile of you, it is not combined with any form you submit, and we do not run advertising on this site.

Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser. You can block them — most browsers allow cookie blocking per site, and Google publishes a browser opt-out add-on. Blocking analytics does not affect anything on this site: every page and every form works without it.

What we never do: sell or share your details with advertisers or data brokers, use analytics data to identify you, or connect your analytics session to a form you submitted. If you ask us to delete what we hold about you, that includes anything traceable to a form submission.

What we collect, and why

Buying guides. If you ask for a guide, we receive your email address and nothing else. We use it to send you the guide and occasional related ones. You can unsubscribe from any of those emails with one click, and replying "unsubscribe" removes you permanently.

Quote requests. If you ask for quotes, we receive your name, phone number, email address (optional), town and a description of the job. We pass those details to local businesses in that trade so they can contact you about the work. We record the time and the page you were on when you agreed, so that we can show what you agreed to if that is ever questioned.

Claim and enquiry forms. If you use the claim form on a listing, we receive the name, phone number, email address, town and message you enter, to reply to you and to confirm that you are authorised to act for that business.

Our hosting provider records standard web server information for every request, including IP addresses, as part of serving the site and protecting it from abuse. We do not use that data to identify individuals and we do not build profiles from it.

What we publish, and where it comes from

This is a directory, so it publishes information about businesses: names, phone numbers, towns, websites and descriptions. That information is compiled from each business’s own public website, and each listing records the page it was taken from. We do not scrape listings from map platforms or buy bulk business lists.

If you own a business listed here and would like an entry corrected or removed, tell us and we will do it. There is no charge for either.

Do we share it?

Yes, in one case, and only because you asked us to. When you submit a quote request, we pass your name, phone number and the details of the job to local businesses in that trade so they can contact you. That is the entire purpose of that form. We send it to a limited number of businesses in the trade and town you selected, and to nobody else.

Businesses pay us for those introductions. We would rather say that plainly than describe it as something it is not: this site is funded by trades paying for enquiries from people who have asked to hear from them.

We do not sell, rent or trade email addresses or mailing lists, we do not share anything with advertisers or data brokers, and we do not pass on details from the guide form at all. Beyond the trades you asked us to contact, information you submit only passes through the service providers that run this site — our hosting and email providers — solely to deliver and store your message. We do not disclose anything else to anyone unless the law requires it.

If you would rather not be contacted, do not submit the quote form — every business on this site is listed with the phone number and website the business publishes itself, so you can go straight to them.

How long we keep it

Guide requests are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Quote requests are kept while they are being passed to trades and afterwards as a record that you consented, and are deleted on request. Claims and enquiries are kept only as long as needed to deal with them and to keep a record of the correction. You can ask us to delete anything at any time and we will.

Your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Principles you may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it if it is wrong, ask us to delete it, or complain about how we have handled it. Contact us and we will respond. If you are not satisfied with our response you can take the matter to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Children

This site is a business directory and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
